At Langston we know that each and every student is unique in their language skills. While many who come have little to no experience studying Mandarin, others have varying levels of ability in speaking, listening, grammar, reading, and writing. We will place you in a class that is suited to your Mandarin level.

Foundation Level

Students at this level have no experience studying Mandarin Chinese. At this level we will spend most of our time studying pinyin(the romanization of Chinese characters), pronunciation, tones, basic grammar, and basic speaking skills.

Elementary Level

This level applies to students with a rudimentary Mandarin knowledge and skill base. Students have either studied for a short time or have short-term experience with the language elements. At this level we will spend most of our time on speaking, listening, and intermediate grammar, gradually introducing more and more character study every week.

Intermediate Level

This level applies to students with a workable Mandarin knowledge and skill base. These students have studied the language and are able to use it in a limited way. At this level we will spend an equal amount of our time on speaking, listening, advanced grammar, and Chinese characters, with more and more focus put on using the language in advanced ways.

Upper-Intermediate Level

This level applies to students with a good Mandarin knowledge and skill base. These students have not only studied the language, but are able to use it semi-fluently to fluently depending on topic. At this level we will spend an equal amount of time on speaking, listening, and Chinese characters, with a focus on discussing and reading about specialized topics (e.g business, politics, medicine, etc.)

Advanced Level

This level applies to students with an excellent Mandarin knowledge and skill base. These students are able to use the language fluently, and are studying to hone their skills and knowledge for advanced language purposes. At this level we will spend an equal amount of time on advanced speaking, listening, and Chinese characters. Students will learn culture and field specific words and phrases, important colloquial phrases, the art of Chinese discussion and negotiation, and will work on mastering their writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills.
